She knows exactly where she draws the line
Sev has spent months navigating the pressure of The Block 2026, making high-stakes renovation decisions, defending her design choices and facing the relentless scrutiny that comes with competing on national television.
But when asked whether she would ever take on the renovation challenge alongside her own husband, Nelson, the interior designer had a surprisingly blunt answer.
“No way,” she said without hesitation.
Sev, whose full name is Sevilay Keser, admitted she has enormous respect for the couples willing to put their relationships through the demands of the Channel Nine competition.
But after watching what the show requires of its contestants, she is convinced that competing alongside her husband would be a step too far.
“I have a huge respect for the couples on the show, even Tayla and Rick’s relationship I think that would be testing at times, but yeah, if I was to come on the show with my husband I just would not be able to survive,” she told Woman’s Day, laughing.
Then came the admission that has summed up her feelings perfectly.
“We’d be divorced,” she joked.
It is not about a lack of love
Sev was quick to make it clear that her reluctance has nothing to do with how she feels about Nelson.
“I love my husband but he’s just not that side of the brain. He doesn’t have that type of makeup for this type of show,” she said.
Her comments were less a criticism of their marriage than an acknowledgement that a relationship can work beautifully in everyday life without necessarily being suited to the extraordinary pressures of a televised renovation competition.
On The Block, couples must make decisions about budgets, design, trades and construction deadlines while dealing with exhaustion and having their disagreements recorded for viewers.
Even a small disagreement can become much harder to resolve when there is a deadline approaching and an unfinished room waiting to be completed.
Sev knows that renovating with someone you love is one thing.
Doing it under intense pressure, with cameras following every move, is something else entirely.
And she appears to know herself well enough to understand which situation she would rather avoid.

Why Courtney was the right person to stand beside her
Instead of entering the competition with Nelson, Sev chose her best friend of 12 years, Courtney Kain.
The pair arrived from Brisbane as one of the most experienced teams in the 2026 competition, bringing together Courtney’s background as a construction site manager and Sev’s expertise as a commercial interior designer.
They have often described themselves as opposites who somehow work exceptionally well together.
“Our friendship just works. It’s chaos and calm in one package. We’re total opposites in some ways but somehow always on the same wavelength,” Sev previously told New Idea.
That balance has helped them divide responsibilities on site.
Courtney focuses on managing the construction work, while Sev concentrates on the design decisions. Both have experience renovating properties, but they have learnt to respect each other’s strengths rather than constantly challenge one another’s decisions.
For Sev, that may be one of the most important differences between entering The Block with a friend and entering it with a spouse.
She and Courtney can disagree, argue and move forward with their friendship intact, without carrying the same expectations into their relationship that a married couple might.
Their friendship was built long before the cameras arrived
The bond between Courtney and Sev is not simply the result of working well together on television.
Their friendship has already carried them through difficult periods away from the show.
When Sev and Nelson were living in an isolated coastal town and Nelson experienced a medical episode, Courtney opened her Brisbane home to the couple.
They lived together for 16 months while Sev and Nelson’s home was under construction, allowing Nelson to access additional care and support.
It was a significant gesture that brought the three of them together during a challenging time.
Courtney was not simply a friend who turned up for celebrations or offered encouragement from a distance.
She made room for them in her own home when they needed it.
That history helps explain why Sev trusted her to take on one of the biggest challenges of their lives.
By the time they arrived at Mount Eliza, they already knew how to support each other when circumstances became difficult.
And while The Block has tested their patience, their long friendship has given them a foundation that was established well before the competition began.
Five months of pressure can change everything
Sev’s comments also reveal how demanding the competition can be for the people who take part.
Contestants are required to make major decisions while working to strict deadlines, often dealing with unexpected problems that can threaten an entire room reveal.
They also have to live alongside their competitors, discuss one another’s work and face the judges’ opinions week after week.
There is very little opportunity to step away from the pressure.
Sev acknowledged that even couples who are strong outside the competition can find the experience testing.
She specifically mentioned father-and-daughter team Rick and Tayla, saying she believed their relationship would face challenges at times, too.
Her point was not that the contestants lacked strong relationships.
It was that the format places people in an environment where even small frustrations can become difficult to manage.
For Sev, knowing her own limits is part of understanding what works best for her marriage.
Even Scott Cam tested their patience
Courtney and Sev have not always found the experience easy.
Their relationship with host Scott Cam has included plenty of teasing, disagreements and moments when the pair felt challenged by his questions about their progress, budgets and building decisions.
Courtney admitted that she initially promised herself she would not argue back with Scott.
But when the pressure mounted, she recalled thinking: “Stuff this, I’m ripping back in.”
It was a glimpse of the tension that can build on site when contestants are already trying to manage deadlines and unexpected problems.
Despite those moments, Sev said there was affection beneath their occasional clashes with the host.
“We had a love-hate relationship,” she said. “[But] he had a little bit of a soft spot for us I think.”
Their exchanges became part of the team’s experience on the show, demonstrating how difficult it can be to maintain composure when the pressure refuses to let up.
Sev’s marriage is not the problem — and she knows it
There is an important distinction behind Sev’s blunt confession.
She has not suggested that her marriage to Nelson is in trouble. Instead, she has made it clear that she would not want to expose their relationship to the particular pressures of The Block.
The couple have already tackled renovation projects together, so the idea of working on a house as a team is not entirely foreign to them.
But renovating a home together in ordinary life is very different from spending months competing against other teams, managing trades under tight deadlines and making expensive decisions while cameras capture the process.
Sev’s remark was delivered with laughter, but the reasoning behind it is straightforward.
She knows that love alone does not guarantee two people will work well together in every environment.
For her, protecting her marriage means recognising that some challenges are better taken on with someone else.
And that does not diminish what she and Nelson have built together.
If anything, it shows that she understands the difference between being a good life partner and being the right renovation teammate.
The choice that says more than the joke
When Sev said she and Nelson would be divorced if they competed together, the remark immediately stood out for its bluntness.
But behind the humour was a more revealing truth about the way she approaches relationships.
She has a husband she loves, a best friend who has supported her through difficult times and a clear understanding of the strengths each person brings to her life.
On The Block, that understanding has helped her and Courtney navigate a demanding competition without needing to be a couple to make an effective team.
Their story is not about proving that one kind of relationship is better than another.
It is about recognising that different bonds serve different purposes — and that the people who stand beside us in one chapter of life may not be the same people we would choose for every challenge.
For Sev, Courtney is the friend she trusts to take on the pressure of The Block.
Nelson is the husband she loves and the partner with whom she is building a life beyond the cameras.
And if her brutally honest confession has made anything clear, it is that she has no intention of putting those two relationships through the same test.
“We’d be divorced,” she laughed.
For Sev, the lesson appears to be simple: sometimes knowing which challenge not to take on together is just as important as knowing which battles are worth fighting.
