VL.AU-“Continuous Oxygen and a Wheelchair!”: John Farnham’s Family Releases Devastating Health Update Right Before His Tribute Concert!

“John’s Health Has Deteriorated in Recent Months. He Now …”: John Farnham’s Family Reveals Why He Will Miss His Tribute Concert in Emotional Health Update

For decades, John Farnham’s voice has been part of the Australian soundtrack. On Sunday night, thousands will gather at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena to celebrate that extraordinary legacy — but the man at the centre of it all will not be there.

John Farnham will not attend The Songs of John Farnham: A Living Legend – The Celebration Concert after his family revealed that his health has deteriorated in recent months.

In an emotional statement released on Saturday, his wife Jill and sons Robert and James said John now requires continuous oxygen support, uses a wheelchair for mobility and receives 24-hour nursing care at home.

The family explained that they had kept the details private while adjusting to his changing needs, but felt it was now important for fans to understand why he would be unable to attend a night being held in his honour.

A Night John Would Have Wanted to Attend

The tribute concert is scheduled for Sunday, September 20, at Rod Laver Arena and will bring together around 120 artists and musicians to celebrate Farnham’s music and career.

John was never scheduled to perform at the concert, so his absence will not require any changes to the line-up. The event will feature his longtime band, a 38-piece orchestra and choir, under the musical direction of Chong Lim.

Among the performers are Tina Arena, Jimmy Barnes, Mahalia Barnes, Kate Ceberano, Diesel, Human Nature, Richard Marx, Jessica Mauboy, Keith Urban, Jon Stevens, Ross Wilson and others, with Celine Dion and Hugh Jackman appearing via satellite. The concert is also raising funds for Head and Neck Cancer Australia.

Yet behind the scale of the celebration is a much quieter reality for the Farnham family.

The Family’s Full Statement

Jill, Robert and James Farnham said:

“John has been deeply moved by everything happening this weekend around the tribute concert at Rod Laver Arena.

The extraordinary work of the producers over these past few months, the generosity of all the artists giving their time, and the dedication of the crew and production teams working so hard to deliver this special concert — none of it is taken for granted by John or any of us, as a family. On John’s behalf, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Many people have been asking whether John will be involved in the concert or attending tomorrow night to watch it all happen. Unfortunately, he will not be able to attend and, as a family, we feel it is important to provide an update on John’s health to help explain why.

John’s health has deteriorated in recent months. He now requires continuous oxygen support and uses a wheelchair for mobility. It has also become necessary for John to receive 24-hour nursing care at home, ensuring trained support is always available when he needs it.

We have kept these matters private while our family has adjusted to John’s changing needs. However, we now feel it is important that John’s fans and supporters understand his circumstances and why he cannot be there this weekend.

If things were different, John would have loved nothing more than to attend the concert. He would undoubtedly have been a little overwhelmed by all the fuss, but he would also have wanted to thank everyone involved in person.

As a family, we have decided that it is best for John to remain at home, where he can be safe and comfortable.

Thank you for your understanding and for the many messages of love and support John continues to receive.

And to everyone involved in this weekend’s celebration concert: chookas!

Much love, Jill, Robert and James Farnham.”

A Private Health Battle Becomes Public

The family’s decision to speak now marks a rare public update on John’s condition.

Since undergoing treatment for oral cancer in 2022, the Australian music legend has largely remained away from public life. His family has generally protected his privacy while he recovered from the extensive treatment and surgeries that followed his diagnosis.

The latest statement makes clear that his circumstances have changed enough for the family to explain why he cannot attend the celebration being held in his name.

It also makes one thing particularly clear: his absence is not because he has turned away from the tribute.

Quite the opposite.

The family says John has been deeply moved by the preparations, the generosity of the artists and the work of everyone involved.

A Different Side of John Was Shared Only Days Ago

The latest news comes shortly after his son Robert offered a more intimate glimpse into his father’s life at home.

Robert recently described John as being “back to his old self” in some ways, saying he remains quick to talk, spends time with his grandson Jett and still sings around the house.

But John has previously confirmed that he will not return to live performance after the surgeries associated with his cancer treatment.

That makes Sunday’s concert especially poignant.

The voice will be everywhere — carried by some of the biggest names in Australian music — while John himself remains at home with his family.

A Celebration of a Voice That Defined Generations

Farnham’s career spans more than six decades, from his teenage years in the 1960s through to the extraordinary success of Whispering Jack and songs including You’re the Voice, Burn for You and Two Strong Hearts.

The upcoming concert is not simply a celebration of an individual performer. It is a gathering around music that has accompanied generations of Australians.

For the Farnham family, however, Sunday will also be about something much more personal: making sure John remains safe and comfortable while his songs fill one of the country’s most famous arenas.

And perhaps that is what makes the family’s final words feel so poignant.

John may not be able to stand among the audience and hear Australia sing his songs.

But everyone involved knows exactly who the night is for.
