Kyle Sandilands Has Left Australian Idol Behind—And Says One New Venture Has Already Changed Everything

Just days after stepping away from Australian Idol, Kyle Sandilands says he’s already looking far beyond radio.

The outspoken broadcaster claims his newly launched subscription platform has exceeded expectations so quickly that the money already generated could keep the business running for years—marking what he believes is the beginning of an entirely new chapter in his career.

A bold new venture gets off to a flying start

Speaking exclusively to nine.com.au, Sandilands said he always believed audiences would follow him beyond traditional radio—but admitted he was surprised by how quickly subscribers signed up.

“We knew it was going to take, but we didn’t know it would take early,” he said.

According to Sandilands, tens of thousands of people had already subscribed before the platform’s official launch, giving him confidence that the project is financially secure.

“There’s plenty of money in the bank. We can afford to keep it running for three years based on what it’s made already.”

He also believes the biggest surge in subscribers is still to come around the official launch on August 10.

Big promises if subscriber numbers keep climbing

Sandilands is hoping to turn subscriber growth into headline-grabbing giveaways.

He revealed that once the platform reaches 100,000 subscribers, he plans to give away a car every month. If membership eventually doubles to 200,000, he says he’ll give away a house or apartment every year.

The campaign echoes the hugely popular giveaways he previously hosted during his years on KIIS FM.

When asked about KIIS launching a similar promotion on the very same day his platform debuts, Sandilands shrugged it off.

“They can’t just lay down and die, they’ve got to do something.”

Not worried about radio rivals

Despite recent ratings headlines surrounding 2GB breakfast host Ben Fordham, Sandilands insisted he no longer views commercial radio as his main battleground.

He argued audience share percentages don’t tell the full story, claiming actual listener numbers matter far more than ratings percentages alone.

Sandilands also dismissed suggestions Fordham had become his biggest competitor, saying the two attract different audiences.

Although he described Fordham as “a nice enough guy,” he admitted he was disappointed after hearing criticism of his former $100 million radio contract.

Fordham has declined to comment on Sandilands’ latest remarks.

Why he really walked away from Australian Idol

The launch of Sandilands’ new platform comes after one of the most turbulent periods of his career.

Earlier this week, he confirmed he would not be returning to Australian Idol.

While he had publicly suggested outside pressure played a role, Sandilands now says the decision was also deeply personal.

He admitted balancing breakfast radio and Australian Idol had become increasingly demanding.

“They’re both enormous jobs that require a lot of thought and attention.”

Sandilands also revealed his wife, Tegan Kynaston, had questioned whether taking on both roles at once was sustainable.

Long filming days, ongoing health issues and the physical demands of television all contributed to his decision.

Still, he spoke warmly about working alongside fellow judges Marcia Hines and Amy Shark, revealing that Marcia had regularly checked in on him following his departure.

A bigger vision beyond radio

Rather than replacing one radio job with another, Sandilands says his focus is building an entirely new media platform.

He hopes to expand the app well beyond his own daily program, adding live news bulletins, television-style content and additional radio shows.

He also revealed there will always be a place for longtime on-air partner Jackie “O” Henderson should she ever wish to join.

Sandilands claimed he has already spoken with Karl Stefanovic and Ray Hadley about future collaborations, while hinting that high-profile figures including Pauline Hanson and Barnaby Joyce are expected to appear as guests.

Turning the page

After a career defined by commercial radio—and following his high-profile departure from KIIS FM and exit from Australian Idol—Kyle Sandilands insists he isn’t looking back.

Whether his ambitious new platform can live up to his predictions remains to be seen.

But for now, the broadcaster appears convinced that his next chapter may prove to be his biggest gamble—and perhaps his most significant reinvention yet.
