Thi74-Jolene’s Off-Camera Phone Call Exposes Heartbreaking Block Tragedy

“She Had Phoned Me and Asked Me to Be Off Mic”: The Block’s Jolene Reveals the Heartbreaking News She Received About Her Mum’s Health

For Jolene Wagner, The Block was supposed to be an extraordinary adventure shared with her husband Adam.

But just days after the couple arrived in Mount Eliza for the 2026 season, one private phone call changed everything.

On the other end was Jolene’s mum, Janelle, with news that left her daughter torn between the competition she had worked so hard to reach and the woman who mattered most to her.

Janelle’s cancer had returned.

And in that moment, Jolene was ready to leave it all behind.

The phone call that changed everything

Jolene, 42, revealed that her mum had specifically asked her to step away from the cameras before telling her the news.

Janelle had previously undergone major surgery in 2025 after being diagnosed with lung cancer, with a significant portion of her lung removed.

Although she initially recovered, the process was slow.

Then, shortly after Jolene and Adam left for The Block, Janelle told her that the cancer had returned in multiple places.

For Jolene, the reaction was immediate.

She wanted to go home.

“I was ready to pack up and head home,” she explained in an emotional interview with New Idea.

After all, this was not simply a difficult piece of news arriving at an inconvenient time.

It was her mum.

And Jolene knew she wanted to be there for her.

But Janelle told her to stay

What happened next is perhaps the most heartbreaking part of the story.

Rather than asking her daughter to come home, Janelle told Jolene the opposite.

She wanted her to stay and finish what they had started.

“She said to me, ‘You need to stay there and win this thing,’” Jolene recalled.

Janelle had been one of the biggest supporters of Jolene and Adam’s Block dream and was described by her daughter as a huge fan of the show.

In fact, Jolene said it was her mum who encouraged the couple to apply in the first place.

Even when they doubted whether they could make it onto the show, Janelle kept pushing them to give it a chance.

So while Jolene felt guilty about staying, she also knew exactly what her mum wanted for her.

Staying in the Block buble became incredibly difficult

The reality of filming a show like The Block made the situation even harder.

Contestants spend weeks living inside an intense renovation bubble, with long workdays, deadlines, cameras and very little connection to life outside the competition.

Jolene admitted she struggled to remain focused while knowing her mum was undergoing treatment.

Part of her wanted to concentrate on the house.

Another part simply wanted to be at home.

She did everything she could to stay connected, calling either Janelle or her sister roughly every second day.

It was a small routine, but one that helped Jolene remain close to the family while she was thousands of kilometres away from them.

Then Janelle made the journey to Mount Eliza

The two women were eventually reunited during The Block‘s family day in Mount Eliza.

For Jolene, seeing her mum again was deeply emotional.

Janelle was still undergoing treatment and, according to Jolene, was physically struggling.

She was short of breath and the journey had taken a significant toll on her.

But she insisted on making the trip to see her daughter.

“She was so adamant she was going to come down,” Jolene said.

The moment carried an added poignancy because Janelle knew she might not be able to be there for the next major milestone.

The moment Jolene was hoping for may happen without her mum there

As the competition moves towards its conclusion, Jolene knows her mum will not be able to stand beside her at the auction.

Janelle has told her daughter that she will not be able to make the journey down for the final auction because of her treatment and ongoing health issues.

Jolene revealed that her mum had completed chemotherapy and radiation but had experienced a number of complications while receiving immunotherapy.

She had also recently been discharged from hospital again.

“She’s still going through it,” Jolene said.

For a daughter who had once been ready to abandon the competition simply to be with her mum, knowing Janelle cannot be there at the finish line is understandably difficult.

But Janelle will still be watching

There is one thing Jolene can hold onto.

Even if Janelle cannot physically stand beside her when the hammer eventually falls, she will be watching the outcome from home.

And that makes the house Jolene and Adam have built feel like more than just another Block project.

The couple entered the competition after years of working together in remote South Australia. Adam, 48, is a qualified carpenter, while the pair have built a life managing a cattle station and raising their family.

They also went into the show as genuine longtime fans. Jolene had spent years trying to convince Adam to audition, and after missing out previously, the couple finally made it onto the 2026 series.

They have since become strong contenders, even securing a perfect 30-point score for their kitchen during the competition.

But none of those achievements can quite compare with the reason Jolene nearly walked away.

A mother’s love behind every room

There is something particularly moving about Janelle’s role in Jolene’s Block journey.

She was the person who encouraged her daughter to take the risk.

She was the person who told her not to give up when Jolene felt she could no longer stay.

And she was the person who, despite facing another difficult chapter herself, still made the exhausting trip to Mount Eliza just to see her daughter.

Now, as Jolene approaches the final stages of the competition, her mum may not be there in person.

But her voice has been with her from the beginning.

“Stay there and win this thing.”

For Jolene, those words mean much more than a push to succeed on reality television.

They are a reminder of why she started — and of the woman who believed in her enough to ask her to keep going, even when it was one of the hardest things she had ever been asked to do. ❤️
