Natalie Bassingthwaighte Opens Up About the Moment She Knew Her Marriage Was Over: “Everything Was Screaming No”
Australian entertainer Natalie Bassingthwaighte has shared one of the most personal chapters of her life, revealing the moment she realised her marriage to musician Cameron McGlinchey could no longer continue.
Speaking candidly on the Inherited podcast, the singer and actress reflected on the emotional journey that ultimately led to the end of their 11-year marriage—and the unexpected connection that changed everything.

Bassingthwaighte and McGlinchey first met in 2004 after she joined the band Rogue Traders. They began dating the following year, married in 2011 and welcomed two children together—daughter Harper in 2010 and son Hendrix in 2013.
After more than a decade of marriage, the couple separated in late 2022.
Looking back, Natalie said the turning point came after she experienced what she described as an immediate and powerful connection with her friend, Pip Loth.
“The next morning I rang my friend and said, ‘I need a therapist. I don’t know what’s going on,’” she recalled.
She began therapy soon afterwards, saying it was the start of a process that completely changed how she understood herself.
“My Body Said No”
Natalie explained that therapy helped her realise she had been living behind emotional walls for years.
One of the clearest signs, she said, was that her relationship with Cameron changed almost overnight.
“The weirdest thing is, from that night, we never touched each other again.”
She said they no longer kissed and rarely embraced, describing it as something she couldn’t control.
“My body said, ‘No, don’t touch me.’”
Despite repeatedly discussing her feelings with her therapist and trying to find a way forward, she said nothing changed.
“It Wasn’t Because He Was a Bad Person”
Natalie was careful to stress that the breakdown of the marriage was never about Cameron’s character.
“You have to feel safe, and it’s not because he’s an awful person.”
Instead, she said she realised she could no longer continue living a life that no longer felt authentic.
“Everything was screaming no.”
The couple attended therapy together while Natalie also continued individual counselling.
During that time, Cameron asked her to stop seeing Pip Loth—a request Natalie immediately knew she couldn’t accept.

Trying Everything to Save the Marriage
Before deciding to separate, Natalie said she explored every possible way to keep the relationship alive.
She even raised the idea of polyamory, despite admitting she knew deep down it wasn’t something either of them truly wanted.
“I still love this guy. But I couldn’t let him touch me. But I couldn’t imagine not being with him.”
Only a few weeks later, they made the mutual decision to end their marriage.

An Unexpected Connection
Natalie admitted she struggled to understand what she was feeling because she had never previously fallen in love with a woman.
She described her connection with Pip as something unlike anything she had experienced before.
“That felt like an awakening… a connection that I’d never felt ever with anybody.”
She also confessed she initially feared losing everything—from her children’s love to her career.
“I was scared my kids wouldn’t love me anymore,” she said, adding that she also worried her professional life would “just fall apart.”
Over time, however, she accepted her feelings and the pair began a romantic relationship.
Finding Happiness Again
Natalie and Pip made their relationship public in late 2023 before announcing their engagement in October 2025.
Reflecting on their relationship, Natalie said the connection feels natural and grounded in shared values.
“We’re both sensitive humans. We’re both givers. We care about people, life, humanity and nature. It just feels right and easy.”
While the end of her marriage was one of the most painful decisions of her life, Natalie says it ultimately became the beginning of a journey toward living more honestly—with herself and with the people she loves.
