Inside Sam Neill’s Private Family Life: The Daughter Who Walked Away From Acting and the Son He Found 25 Years Later

Sam Neill became one of the most recognisable actors of his generation, building an extraordinary career that stretched from New Zealand cinema to some of Hollywood’s biggest productions.

Yet beyond the film sets, premieres and international fame, the Jurassic Park star often made it clear that his greatest source of pride was his family.

Over the years, Sam became a father of four and grandfather of eight. His extended family included a daughter who briefly followed him into acting before choosing an entirely different creative career, a son who worked behind the scenes in Hollywood and an eldest child with whom he reunited after more than two decades apart.

Elena Neill briefly followed her father into acting

Born in 1991, Elena Neill is Sam’s only biological daughter with Japanese make-up artist Noriko Watanabe, whom he married in 1989.

Growing up around the entertainment industry, Elena briefly explored acting herself.

She appeared in the 2004 Australian television film The Brush-Off, an adaptation of Shane Maloney’s crime novel that was directed and produced by her father.

Almost a decade later, Elena appeared in Jane Campion’s acclaimed mystery series Top of the Lake. In the episode, she played Stella, a young woman working as a tattoo artist.

The role would prove unexpectedly close to the life Elena later chose for herself.

After stepping away from acting, she pursued tattoo artistry and established a creative career in Melbourne, largely remaining outside the public spotlight associated with her famous father.

Elena has since become a mother, although she has kept details about her daughter private.

Sam occasionally shared affectionate memories of raising Elena in his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?

One of his favourite stories involved Elena being asked what her father did for work when she was young.

“My daddy sits in caravans,” she replied, referring to the many hours actors spend waiting between scenes.

The son Sam reunited with after 25 years

One of the most personal chapters of Sam’s family story involved his eldest son, Andrew.

In 1969, when Sam was just 22 and still finding his way in life, Andrew was placed for adoption.

Father and son would not see each other again for 25 years.

Sam later explained that the two eventually began searching for one another, leading to their reunion in 1994.

However, he said the experience was very different from the dramatic reunions commonly portrayed in films. Rather than an overwhelming or sentimental encounter, Sam described it as a mature meeting between two adults attempting to understand their shared history.

Reflecting on the decision many years later, Sam acknowledged that he had underestimated his ability to become a parent when he was young.

The experience also shaped his understanding of family, which he described as larger and more unconventional than most.

Tim Neill-Harrow chose a career behind the camera

By the time Sam reconnected with Andrew, he had welcomed other children.

His son Tim Neill-Harrow was born in 1983 during Sam’s relationship with New Zealand actress Lisa Harrow. The couple met while working on the 1981 supernatural film Omen III: The Final Conflict.

Like his father, Tim entered the film industry, although he chose to work behind the camera rather than become an actor.

His production credits have included work in camera and electrical departments on major international films, including The Matrix Reloaded and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Tim later welcomed three children of his own: son Lachlan and twin daughters Molly and Poppy.

He also spoke warmly about Sam’s role as a father, acknowledging that acting frequently required him to travel but insisting that his absences never changed the love he had for his children.

Within the family, Sam was affectionately known as “Grad” by his grandchildren.

Sam’s close relationship with adopted daughter Maiko

Sam also became a father to Noriko’s daughter from a previous relationship, Maiko, whom he adopted during his marriage to the make-up artist.

Now known as Maiko Spencer, she has largely chosen to live away from public attention.

However, Sam made a rare exception to his usual rule of keeping family photographs off social media when Maiko welcomed her son Nahlo in 2021.

Sharing a photograph of his then-two-week-old grandson, Sam expressed his overwhelming joy at the newest addition to the family.

It was a glimpse of the softer, private side of an actor more commonly associated with dramatic film roles and red-carpet appearances.

Sam and Noriko were married for nearly three decades before divorcing in 2017.

Life as a grandfather of eight

Despite spending significant periods away from home for work, Sam remained deeply involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren.

He openly admitted that balancing acting and parenthood had not always been easy. His career regularly required lengthy shoots in different countries, and he recognised that absence had influenced parts of his experience as a father.

However, he refused to judge himself too harshly, acknowledging that there was no perfect guide to parenting.

In later life, becoming a grandfather brought Sam enormous happiness.

He often joked that eight grandchildren were already enough to keep track of, especially when it came to remembering everyone’s names. Behind the humour, however, was an unmistakable sense of pride in the large family that had grown around him.

The deeply personal reason he wrote his memoir

That devotion to his family ultimately inspired one of Sam’s most important final projects.

After being diagnosed with stage-three blood cancer in 2022, the actor began writing Did I Ever Tell You This?

Initially, writing gave him something meaningful to focus on while receiving treatment. But the memoir soon became more than an account of an extraordinary acting career.

For Sam, it was a way to preserve his memories, stories, jokes and reflections for his children and grandchildren.

Although the book became a bestseller and offered fans a rare look at his life beyond the screen, he viewed it primarily as a record his family could return to in the future.

It became one of his most personal legacies.

Surrounded by family in Sydney

Sam passed away at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney on July 13 after developing pneumonia.

His family described the loss as sudden and unexpected, while also revealing that the actor had remained cancer-free.

In a statement announcing his passing, they said Sam had been surrounded by loved ones and had faced his final moments with the same dignity that characterised his life.

They also thanked the hospital staff for the care he received and asked for privacy while the family came to terms with their loss.

Tributes quickly arrived from across the entertainment industry, including messages from Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg and Sam’s former co-stars Laura Dern and Joseph Mazzello.

But behind the celebrated performances and decades of international success was the role Sam appeared to value most deeply: being a father, grandfather and the centre of an extended family whose story was every bit as remarkable as his career.
