Samantha Armytage and Michael Willesee Jr Face a Difficult Today Test — as One Remark Points to a Deeper Problem for Nine

Nine’s latest attempt to steady the Today show has received a complicated response, with temporary hosts Samantha Armytage and Michael Willesee Jr struggling to narrow the gap with breakfast television rival Sunrise.

Armytage, 49, and Willesee Jr, 56, were brought together as Nine continues reshuffling its presenting team following Karl Stefanovic’s departure and Sarah Abo’s early maternity leave.

However, their first appearances as a pairing quickly divided viewers. While some welcomed Armytage’s experience and lively presence, others argued that the chemistry between the two hosts felt uncomfortable and had not yet developed naturally.

Viewers divided over temporary pairing

Several social media users criticised Willesee Jr’s delivery, describing his unscripted moments as difficult to follow and questioning whether he was suited to the fast-moving breakfast format.

Armytage also attracted some sharp reactions, with a handful of viewers claiming they were considering switching channels while she remained in the hosting chair.

One viewer described the current edition of Today as lacking energy following the departure of its former presenting team, while another suggested the program needed a broader refresh rather than another temporary replacement.

The criticism was far from unanimous, however.

A number of viewers praised Armytage’s polished performance and said she appeared relaxed during her return to breakfast television. Others suggested Nine should find a permanent co-host capable of matching her energy.

One supporter said Armytage was “captivating to watch,” while another argued that she could eventually help improve the program’s audience figures.

Early figures keep Sunrise ahead

Preliminary audience numbers cited for Monday morning indicated that Armytage’s first day had not immediately changed the balance between the competing programs.

At one point, Today reportedly attracted approximately 45,000 viewers compared with 54,000 watching Sunrise. Later in the broadcast, Seven’s program was said to have extended its lead to 78,000 viewers, while Nine recorded approximately 48,000.

Although individual morning segments do not necessarily reveal the long-term potential of a hosting combination, the early figures added to the pressure surrounding Nine’s next decision.

The network has been experimenting with different presenters as it searches for a stable arrangement capable of rebuilding audience loyalty.

An awkward moment breaks the tension

Armytage’s return began with an unscripted moment when an alarm sounded from her phone shortly after Monday’s broadcast began.

She was seen quickly attempting to silence the device before explaining that the alarm normally marked the time she woke up.

Rather than allowing the interruption to derail the segment, Armytage laughed at the mistake, while Willesee Jr joked that the alarm had reminded her she was supposed to be presenting the show.

The moment highlighted the unusual circumstances surrounding Armytage’s return to breakfast television. She previously spent eight years hosting Seven’s Sunrise and is familiar with the demanding early-morning schedule, despite describing her latest role as a temporary assignment.

“Which does not bode well”

Before her first appearance, Armytage encouraged her Instagram followers to tune in, joking that appearing on television would be a waste of makeup if nobody was watching.

She also offered a prize to the follower who sent her the most unusual photograph of themselves watching the program.

But when several followers asked which channel Today was on, Armytage responded with a laugh: “Which does not bode well. It’s Channel Nine!”

The remark was delivered lightly, yet it carried an uncomfortable undertone.

At a time when Today is attempting to rebuild its audience and establish a new identity, the fact that some of Armytage’s own followers did not immediately know where to find the program may have revealed a problem deeper than presenter chemistry or a single morning’s ratings.

A challenge larger than two hosts

The mixed reaction to Armytage and Willesee Jr arrives during a difficult period for Today.

The program has reportedly continued to lose ground since Stefanovic’s exit, while Sunrise remains the clear national ratings leader. Figures reported last month placed Seven’s program at approximately 456,000 national viewers, compared with around 226,000 for Today.

Nine’s immediate challenge is finding presenters who can create convincing chemistry, respond naturally during unscripted moments and give audiences a reason to return each morning.

Yet Armytage’s joking admission suggested another concern: the network may not only need to persuade viewers to choose Today over its rivals, but also remind them where — and perhaps why — they should watch it at all.

After repeated lineup changes and a period of uncertainty behind the scenes, rebuilding the program’s identity could prove far more difficult than simply filling two empty chairs.
