Samantha Armytage’s first morning back on Today didn’t quite go as planned.
Just moments after returning to Channel Nine’s breakfast program, the veteran presenter found herself scrambling to silence an unexpected interruption live on air—turning an awkward moment into one of the show’s first talking points of the day.
The light-hearted mishap came as Today continues searching for stability following recent changes to its hosting line-up.
An unexpected interruption on live television
Armytage returned to Today on Monday, co-hosting alongside journalist Michael Willesee Jr. in her first appearance on the program since filling in over the Christmas period.
After the morning news bulletin, viewers saw Armytage quickly reaching for her phone as an alarm suddenly sounded during the live broadcast.
Laughing off the moment, she explained it was simply the alarm she normally uses to wake up each morning.
“It’s all happening—my alarm just went off because this is the time I normally get up,” she joked.
Willesee Jr. joined the fun, teasing that the alarm had arrived just in time to remind his co-host she was already on air.
The pair quickly moved on, with the unexpected moment adding some humour to the morning’s broadcast.
A playful plea before going on air
Hours before returning to television, Armytage had taken to Instagram with a light-hearted request for viewers to tune in.
She even encouraged followers to send photos showing the most unusual place they were watching the program from.
Joking about the realities of breakfast television, she quipped that if nobody was watching, all the effort of getting ready would be “a complete waste of makeup.”
She also laughed that some followers had even asked which channel the show was on, reminding everyone that she would be appearing on Channel Nine.
Returning during a challenging period for Today
Armytage’s guest hosting role comes as Today continues navigating a period of significant transition.
The breakfast program is currently without a permanent co-host after Karl Stefanovic’s departure, while regular presenter Sarah Abo remains on maternity leave.
Nine has been rotating several presenters through the chair as the network evaluates its long-term hosting plans.
At the same time, the program continues competing with Seven’s Sunrise, which has maintained a strong lead in the national breakfast television ratings.
Hosting plans changed at the last minute
Behind the scenes, reports suggested Brisbane presenter Joel Dry had originally been expected to join Armytage for the week.
According to reports, those plans changed shortly before the program returned to air, with Michael Willesee Jr. instead remaining in the co-hosting role.
Nine has not publicly commented on the reported changes or the reasons behind them.
Willesee Jr. had already been presenting alongside Sylvia Jeffreys before extending his stint for another week.
A relaxed start despite the spotlight
Although the unexpected phone alarm briefly interrupted her return, Armytage handled the situation with humour and quickly settled back into the broadcast.
