Six years after Michael Klim’s life changed in ways he could never have anticipated, the former Australian Olympic champion and Michelle Owen are preparing for a deeply personal new chapter. But just months into their relationship, Klim was facing an uncertain future — and once made a heartbreaking admission about whether Michelle should remain by his side.
Michael Klim and Michelle Owen Step Into an Unexpected New Chapter — After a Heartbreaking Admission Left Their Future Uncertain
For Michael Klim and Michelle Owen, the future looks very different today from the one they were facing six years ago.
The former Australian Olympic swimming champion and his longtime partner are now engaged and preparing for their wedding, marking a beautiful new chapter after a period that tested both Klim’s health and their still-new relationship in ways neither could have predicted.
Everything changed only months after they met
Klim and Owen met at a beach club in Bali in 2019 and quickly formed a connection.
But even in those early days, Klim knew something was not right. He had begun experiencing neurological symptoms in his legs, although he had no clear explanation for what was happening.
Late that year, the situation became frighteningly real when Klim’s legs gave way at Kuala Lumpur airport. Unable to stand, he called Owen in distress from the terminal. They had known each other for only a few months.
A diagnosis finally brought answers
It took around six months before doctors diagnosed Klim with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), a rare autoimmune neurological disorder that damages peripheral nerves and can cause weakness and sensory loss.
For an athlete whose identity had been built around extraordinary physical strength, the change was profound.
Within roughly a year, Klim said he had lost much of the muscle in his right leg. Walking became increasingly difficult, and he eventually began using braces and a walking stick.
Michael made a heartbreaking admission
The physical changes were only one part of what Klim was experiencing.
Speaking to Australian Story, he revealed that during those difficult early days, he worried about what his condition would mean for Michelle and their relationship.
At one point, he told her: “I don’t want you to have to live with this burden.”
Klim later admitted that the emotional struggle became even harder than the physical deterioration, saying simply: “I couldn’t see a future.”
For a relationship that had only just begun, the uncertainty could easily have changed everything.
Michelle chose a very different path
Owen acknowledged that she could have looked at the circumstances and decided it was not what she had signed up for.
Instead, she remained beside Klim.
A planned two-week visit to Bali in early 2020 unexpectedly became much longer when COVID travel restrictions arrived. Living alongside Klim and his three children, Owen saw firsthand how rapidly his condition was affecting everyday life.
Klim’s father, Wojtek, later told Australian Story that Michelle remained beside his son even through his darkest periods.
Six years later, their story has taken another turn
What began amid enormous uncertainty has now reached a very different point.
Klim and Owen became engaged in late 2025, after approximately six years together. They have also made plans to move from Bali to the Gold Coast, where they are preparing to establish a home and plan their wedding.
For Klim, the relationship has become inseparable from the way he now views those difficult years. He described meeting Michelle as one of the brightest things to emerge from that period.
A new purpose beyond the pool
Klim’s life has also taken on another new direction.
Together with Owen, he established the Klim Foundation, which aims to increase awareness of CIDP, support patients and caregivers, and encourage faster diagnosis and better treatment.
The Olympic champion who once measured success through medals and records now says his experiences have fundamentally changed the way he sees himself and what matters.
And after six years in which their future was once anything but certain, the wedding ahead gives Klim and Owen’s story an especially moving new meaning.
