Samantha Armytage’s return to breakfast television began with an unexpected live interruption when her phone alarm sounded during her first morning back on the Today show.

The veteran presenter joined Michael Willesee Jr. at the desk on Monday, marking her latest fill-in appearance on Nine’s flagship breakfast program.

But shortly after the opening news bulletins, viewers saw Armytage hurriedly reach for her phone as an alarm began sounding beside her.

Laughing off the awkward moment, she explained that it had been set for the time she would usually be waking up rather than already appearing live on television.

Willesee Jr. quickly joined the joke, suggesting the alarm had arrived just in time to remind his co-host that she was supposed to be on air.

A playful appeal to viewers

The interruption came only hours after Armytage posted a light-hearted video encouraging her social media followers to watch her return.

She joked that presenting the show would be “a complete waste of makeup” if nobody tuned in and even offered a prize to the person who sent her the most interesting photograph of themselves watching the program.

However, she admitted that some followers had asked which network the show aired on, prompting her to remind them that Today could be found on Channel Nine.

Although delivered with humour, the appeal came during a challenging period for the breakfast program.

Figures cited in recent reports showed Seven’s Sunrise attracting approximately 456,000 national viewers, compared with around 226,000 for Today.

Nine is continuing to reshape the program following Karl Stefanovic’s departure, while Sarah Abo remains away on maternity leave.

A reported last-minute hosting change

Armytage’s first week back has also attracted attention because of a reported change to the planned hosting lineup.

Brisbane news presenter Joel Dry had reportedly been scheduled to appear beside Armytage for the entire week, with the stint expected to serve as an informal audition for the vacant permanent position.

According to reports, Dry remained listed on internal schedules until only days before the program began.

However, he was later told he would no longer be required to travel to Sydney, and Willesee Jr. was instead asked to extend his own presenting run.

Multiple sources claimed the decision followed concerns raised by Armytage, although neither she nor Nine publicly confirmed the reported circumstances surrounding the change.

Dry had reportedly believed he remained a serious contender for the permanent role and had begun discussing the financial terms that could accompany the position.

What comes next for Today?

Willesee Jr. had already spent time presenting the program alongside Sylvia Jeffreys before remaining at the desk for Armytage’s return.

The latest pairing gives Nine another opportunity to test its on-screen chemistry as executives continue searching for a longer-term direction for the show.
