For generations of Australian viewers, the Willesee surname has represented far more than television fame.

Mike Willesee helped transform the country’s current-affairs landscape, building a formidable reputation through programs including Four Corners and A Current Affair, which he created and first hosted for Nine in 1971. His broadcasting career stretched across five decades before his death from throat cancer in March 2019 at the age of 76.

Now, the family name has returned to morning television through his son, Michael Willesee Jr.

A return that revived an Australian television legacy

Michael stepped back in front of national audiences in July 2026 as Nine began trialling different presenting combinations on Today.

The appearance marked his first major television role in more than a decade, immediately renewing interest in the famous surname he has carried throughout his career.

Yet Michael’s professional journey was never simply a continuation of his father’s.

He began in journalism before working with Nine News and A Current Affair during the 1990s. He later moved behind the camera, producing documentaries, and eventually joined Sky News Australia.

In 2014, he left broadcasting to work for then-federal treasurer Joe Hockey, later moving into corporate communications before concentrating on his young family.

His return to Nine therefore represented something more complicated than a son following directly in his father’s footsteps.

It brought together two careers separated by different eras, different styles and more than a decade away from television.

The appointment carried unusual significance because Mike Willesee had created and originally fronted the program more than five decades earlier.

Announcing the role, Allison described A Current Affair as a program embedded in her family’s history through her late father-in-law.

It meant the Willesee connection to the program was continuing—not through an attempt to recreate Mike’s career, but through another member of the family entering the role in her own way.

However, their paths have never been identical.
