“I Wish I Had…” Daniel Vasquez Had One Special Plan for His Future With Mia Lay — But That Moment Never Came

At Constable Mia Lay’s final farewell in Sydney, her partner Daniel Vasquez shared a deeply personal detail about the future they had been planning together — and the moment he had hoped would mark the beginning of their next chapter.

Hundreds of mourners gathered at St Andrew’s Cathedral in Sydney on Wednesday to farewell Constable Mia Lay, with family, friends, colleagues and senior officials remembering a young police officer whose career had only just begun.

But among the many tributes delivered during the service, one deeply personal moment offered another glimpse of the life Mia had been building away from her uniform.

Standing before the congregation in his own police uniform, her partner Daniel Vasquez spoke about their relationship, the future they had imagined together — and one plan he never got the chance to carry out.

His reflection ended with three simple words:

“I wish I had.”

A love story that began at the Police Academy

Mia and Daniel’s story began through policing.

The pair met at the NSW Police Academy and graduated from the same class in May 2025. Their connection quickly grew, and Daniel told mourners that being together came with an unusual sense of familiarity.

He recalled that they would often say it felt as though they had known each other for a lifetime.

Their relationship continued alongside the beginning of their policing careers, with both building lives inside the profession that had first brought them together.

For Daniel, however, their plans extended well beyond their work.

A quiet plan for their future together

During his tribute, Daniel revealed that he and Mia had recently gone ring shopping.

Behind that seemingly ordinary moment was a much bigger plan.

Daniel had intended to propose during a holiday to Fiji the couple were preparing to take this month.

It was meant to be a milestone in a future they had already begun imagining together — and apparently, the surprise was not quite as secret as Daniel believed.

Mia seemed to have worked out what was coming.

Daniel recalled her joking that she already knew what her answer would be and telling him to hurry up and ask.

Then came the line that brought the unfinished plan into painful focus:

“I wish I had.”

A trip that was meant to mark a new beginning

The detail gave new meaning to what otherwise would have been another holiday together.

Fiji was not simply somewhere the couple planned to visit.

For Daniel, it had quietly become the place where he intended to ask Mia to take the next step with him.

That moment never arrived.

Instead, the plan became part of the story Daniel shared while saying goodbye — a glimpse of a future that had felt close enough for the couple to talk about, joke about and begin preparing for.

“Being together felt like home”

Daniel also reflected on the relationship they had already shared.

He told mourners that he and Mia understood each other deeply and that being with her felt like home.

He described himself as grateful for the time they had together and spoke of a kind of love he had never known before meeting her.

Those words placed the unfinished proposal within a much larger story.

The significance was not simply that Daniel had bought or considered a ring. It was that the couple appeared to have reached a point where their lives, careers and future plans were increasingly intertwined.

A final farewell in the uniform they once shared

There was another poignant detail to Daniel’s tribute.

He delivered it dressed in police uniform — the same profession through which he and Mia had first met.

Daniel said that wearing the uniform in the future would continue to remind him of her.

It created a difficult contrast with the beginning of their story: two young recruits meeting through the Police Academy and graduating together, before one eventually stood in uniform to farewell the other.

Mia had served with NSW Police for around 16 months and was remembered by Commissioner Mal Lanyon as an officer who had shown “exceptional promise”.

She had also previously received formal recognition after locating and arresting an armed man in a Redfern park.

Daniel’s tribute was one of several deeply personal reflections shared during the service.

Mia’s father, Clem Lay, remembered his daughter as his “firstborn flower”, speaking about the energy and determination she had shown throughout her life.

He said he had initially felt apprehensive when she decided to become a police officer, but came to understand that protecting others was part of who she was.

Her mother, Tamara Evans, remembered a daughter who loved her family, her partner, her friends and her work.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon described Mia as resilient and kind-hearted and said she had earned the respect of those around her.

During the service, it was also announced that she had been posthumously recognised with police service honours.

Three words that captured everything left unsaid

Many of the tributes at St Andrew’s Cathedral looked back at the life Mia had already lived — her family, personality, friendships and early achievements as a police officer.

Daniel’s story looked somewhere else.

It looked toward the future.

There had been a ring. There was a trip planned. There was a question he intended to ask — and, judging from Mia’s teasing response, an answer both of them already seemed to know.

None of it unfolded in the way they had expected.

And in the middle of a final farewell filled with memories, Daniel reduced everything that might have come next to three quiet words:

“I wish I had.”
