A familiar face brings humour back to Today
Stepping in for Sarah Abo as she begins maternity leave, Samantha Armytage made her return to breakfast television on Monday alongside Michael Willesee Jr.
Known for her quick wit, the former Sunrise host wasted little time bringing her trademark humour to the program.
During a live cross from Mount Buller in Victoria, weather presenter Tim Davies spoke with a resort representative about the mountain’s advanced snowmaking equipment.
The guest jokingly described the machines as “margarita makers,” prompting laughter in the studio.
One joke immediately brought Danika Mason to mind
After the segment, Michael Willesee Jr. jokingly wondered whether the machines could actually be used to make margaritas.
Armytage instantly responded with a cheeky remark.
“Ask Danika.”
She then added with a smile:
“Danika, how does it work? Too soon?”
The playful comment appeared to reference Mason’s widely discussed live cross during the 2026 Winter Olympics, when she stumbled over her words while presenting after admitting she had consumed alcohol beforehand.
Then Samantha stopped herself
Almost as quickly as she made the joke, Armytage appeared to reconsider.
Realising the circumstances had changed since that incident, she immediately softened her remarks.
“No… but she’s an expectant mother.”
The comment prompted laughter in the studio, including from Mason herself, and the conversation quickly moved on.
Rather than allowing the joke to linger, Armytage acknowledged the happy chapter Mason is now experiencing as she prepares to welcome her first child.
The live television moment Danika never tried to hide
Following the Winter Olympics broadcast, Mason publicly apologised to viewers, admitting she had made a serious error in judgement.
She explained that having a drink before going on air—combined with the freezing temperatures, high altitude and skipping dinner—had affected her far more than expected.
“I totally misjudged the situation. I shouldn’t have had a drink.”
Mason accepted full responsibility and said the broadcast fell well short of the professional standards she expected of herself.
The difficult hours that followed
Speaking later about the incident, Mason admitted the immediate aftermath was one of the hardest periods of her career.
She feared she might lose everything.
“I knew straight away that I’d stuffed up.”
“For the next 24 hours I thought my career was over.”
However, support from colleagues, friends and the rugby league community helped her regain perspective.
Former NRL great Andrew Johns regularly checked in on her, while her fiancé Liam Knight reassured her during the difficult period.
She also revealed Karl Stefanovic called shortly after the broadcast and encouraged her to address the mistake honestly.
When Mason told him she intended to apologise publicly, Karl responded:
“Perfect. We’ll be here for you.”
A very different chapter today
Much has changed since that difficult period.
Mason has since announced she and fiancé Liam Knight are expecting their first child—a baby girl due later this year.
Armytage was among those who publicly congratulated the couple when they shared the news, describing it as “fabulous.”
Her brief hesitation on Monday morning reflected that change: what began as a playful callback to an infamous television moment ended instead with a warm acknowledgement that Mason’s life has moved on to a far happier chapter.
